Wifi Predator - 2009/02/11 06:40 Hey guys... long time, no see. I'm in the process of building my own predator. I've got the router already and the setup seems to be working fine with the DD-WRT. The only difference that I have, is that I am mounting everything in my car for when I go storm chasing. (I'll be mounting the antenna on top of the car and have a way to move it 360 degrees.) As such, my goal is to be able to pull off the interstate quick, point my antenna at a nearby town, and hopefully pull in a few radar scans.

Anyway, I've got a few questions.

A.) For those that have built the device, roughly what's the furthest distance you've gotten out of it?

B.) Would an amplifier between the router and antenna do me any good such as this?
http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Digitalet/items/item.aspx?itemid=2876760

C.) Would there be a better antenna for my application, than what's in the article?

(I realize I could buy a mobile broadband plan, but that's just way out of my budget for the time being.)

Thanks

Re:Wifi Predator - 2009/02/12 23:22 Hey there. hope your having better luck with your predator than me :/

Can you help me out and tell me...did you set at the settings in the router to the exact specs of the "wifi predator" build off this site?

See I did and my predator works for about 3 minutes...then it always loses the signal or it gets weaker and disconnects etc...

Someone on the DD-WRT forum told me to turn down the Xmit power from 200 that is recommended to around 28 or default setting. He said maybe I'm overheating the router and causing it to fail....I don't know.

Also in regards to your problem. Maybe grab a bigger antenna through Hyperlink. There having a great sale right now on many of their antennas. I have a 2.4hz 24DBi gain grid antenna and trying to hook that up to the predator. Maybe give that antenna a try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

my email is: razo321@hotmail.com

For some reason im not recieving messages through this site.

Regards,

Jeff

Re:Wifi Predator - 2009/02/13 05:29 At first I had my settings the same as listed, but then I turned my Xmit power to somewhere around 70. I really can't afford to fry the thing. It seems to work relatively good that way so far using the stock antenna. I've noticed that mine even set to the 70 tends to heat it up quite a bit. I would definitely recommend turning it down. I also messed with a few of the other settings to better tune it to my application. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of pulling over for 5 minutes to wait for a strong signal.

I like your suggestion for the new antenna. I would probably mount it to the roof of my car. I'm not sure if that much surface area is going to be alright for my application. Typically we drive 90mph into head winds of 60mph or more. I'm thinking the yagi might be better suited for me, but the gain is definitely a lot higher for the dish.

Have you been able to do any tests to see how far you can pick up a signal with it?

If I can get roughly 3 miles out of the antenna or more, I'm good.
