Too quick to lock? - 2006/05/04 06:15 Wow, you guys were sure quick to lock the 'Passwords' post over in requests for hacks. It was just over 3 hours from post to lock. The poster, ilikethemoon247, has 40 posts on the site so s/he doesn't seem to be doing a drive by posting. I am really interested in what his/her response would have been to your statement about this not being a cracking site.

There are very legit reasons for needing to do password recovery and any sysadmin worth his pay will have a set of tools for doing just that. I *frequently* have to recover user's website passwords when I move them to a new computer. They *never* see the last page when registering with a website that tells them to write down their password.

Hell, not only do I have password tools but I also use network sniffers, port scanners and other tools like back orifice and metasploit in order to test and manage my network. Funny how all the best tools for doing my job are created by developers who are labeled as criminals. Does that make me a criminal?

Re:Too quick to lock? - 2006/05/04 23:22 Nullkraft,

I think you don't understand our intent, maybe my second post is what made it confusing, I'll probably delete it...

Also I agree with you, there are many legit reasons to crack passwords, I've had to do it a number of times for friends who forget their AIM passwords or their e-mail account passwords.

I also agree that ilikethemoon247 is not some random noob who just wants to learn to hack people and have nothing to do with i-hacked. However, his exact intent was not stated, so I had to make a choice.

Also in the speediness, well that's entirely coincidence that I acted so quickly.

Also, no the use of programs made by people that are labeled criminals doesn't make you one, nor does it make them one. I use all sorts of programs, packet sniffer to retrieve a url I needed, DVDXCopy (xbox homebrew) to backup games I own to my xbox's hdd.

Your reasons is what's important.

ilikethemoon247,

I appologize if there was a legit reason (other than curiousity) if you had a good reason, you can e-mail me, or just post in a new thread, this time giving the reason, if their is a legit reason, I will not lock, look down upon, or delete the thread.

everyone,

you have to understand the limitations of the internet and of merely reading text. I nor Bill have the ability to always tell what a topic's tone is in, for example, the word when the word "hey" is typed, you can't always tell if the author is meaning hey as in greeting, or if they are yelling at you. Sometimes you can tell, but this is one of those times, I just can't be certain.

That's my feeling also. But I have to admit that I don't like using those kind of tools in front of people. The knowledge I have can be used to help or hurt but some people are just afraid of what I am *able* to do.

Your reasons is what's important.

True. And that was why I was crying about the thread being locked is because I was hoping ilikethemoon247 would come back with his/her reason.

[snip...] you can't always tell if the author is meaning hey as in greeting, or if they are yelling at you. Sometimes you can tell, but this is one of those times, I just can't be certain.
Just for the record I prefer a well moderated list like this one. I hate it when an open forum (inevitably?) degrades into pure noise.
