Help regarding my cable modem.. - 2005/03/15 22:44 Any cable installers, or anyone fluent in cable systems?

I had a problem with my cable modem resetting every hour or so. It would take about fifteen minutes to turn back on, unless I unplugged it and plugged it back in.

The cable guy came today when I was at work. I now have a new cable modem, and some contraption under my desk. The guy took the cable line and has it connected to a device that I have identified as a Digital Plus Directional Coupler VSMDP - 4dB.

The weird thing is that the cable in is connected to the IN port, the cable to the modem is connected to the TAP port, and a TR75LT Lockinator was just hanging from the OUT port of the coupler. I have discovered that the "Lockinator" is some sort of security device, but I cannot figure out why it wasn't tightened (it fell off the coupler when I was looking at it), and why there was nothing connected to the other end of it.

My wife was here when the cable guy was working, and she says he mentioned something about there being static on the line, but why would he replace the cable modem if it was just static?

Re:Help regarding my cable modem.. - 2005/03/18 11:40 I beleive that a static line means you have a static IP (It should stay the same for the most part). http://ipods.freepay.com/?r=9960901

Re:Help regarding my cable modem.. - 2005/12/25 00:33 The lockinator is just a 75 ohm device that places an extra load on the cable. It is specially designed with a security feature to prevent tampering. That security feature is just a collar that prevents you from messing with it, unless you have the right tool.

One possible reason for placing an extra load on the line is to use up some of the power generated by static on the line. It's possible the cable modem was damaged by the static and the lockinator was added to help prevent future damage. It should have been properly installed. Sounds like he didn't have the right tool.

Re:Help regarding my cable modem.. - 2006/01/05 09:57 technically you have a dynamic addy but it sorta remains static, your ip will stay the same(for the most part) but the lease has to be renewed everyso often, or thats how it worked for me. dont know about the lockinator though.
