in need of help! - 2007/08/18 00:21 Ok... i'll do my best to explain as much of this as i can...

my friend sent me weird files on msn, i didnt know what was going on. i accepted but cancelled when i realized it was a virus. i couldnt delete the file, and then reset my computer because it was frozen.
and now i cant turn it back on, no BIOS, no POST, it's like the power button isnt even connected

one friend seems to think it's either a blown part or a "BIOS Bomb" virus.

System Info:
Asus P5WD2-E Premium
2GB Micron RAM
Intel Pentium D 805 2.66 GHz (Overclocked to 3.2)
Sapphire Radeon X1900XT 512MB

I have tried:
clearing CMOS
power cycle
try to boot with only vid card
test psu (it works)
shorting out power pins on mobo (in case of dead power switch)

i was told it was likely that the virus was VUNDO, which is a major MSN virus... but it doesnt seem to fit the symptoms

if you can provide any thoughts at all please do. from what i hear this can be anyhting from a dead part to a Bios Bomb that killed everything in my computer.

Re:in need of help! - 2007/08/18 06:36 Do you happen to know the filename of the file(s) he sent you?

Re:in need of help! - 2007/08/18 06:53 no, but i dont think it's a BIOS destroying virus anymore... it seems most likely that my mobo died when i reset it.
although it's possible that the bios is screwed

i believe the file that does the infection is a.exe lol but dont take my word for it

Re:in need of help! - 2007/08/18 14:39 Well from what i read online it is suppose to have " ASUS CrashFree BIOS 2 (an option to restore BIOS automatically from a floppy or bootable CD even when the data in the flash-chip is damaged)" So you may want to try reflashing the bios.
Here is the link to asus's download page for your board. P5WD2-E Premium

If that doesn't work you may want to try returning the board. All Asus motherboards have a three year warranty if bought after November 1st, 1999. They tell you to contact where ever you bought it from.

Re:in need of help! - 2007/08/21 02:50 would that work if the computer wont turn on? like it wont do anything at all lol.

Re:in need of help! - 2007/08/22 00:10 well... if I were betting on it... and all connections are still plugged in... the power supply has died. In the ATX standard for power systems, there is a wire... once the motherboard tells the power supply to turn on, the power supply has a feature built in that tells the motherboard that the power it is sending out is currently within the tolerances of the atx standard. That is the power good or power ok signal. It is done within the power supply, however, if the power supply does not supply that signal, the motherboard will not "power on" even though it truely does have power. On the other hand, if the signal is sent correctly from the power supply, but the motherboard does not receive it correctly (blown chip, capacitor, or resistor) it will not power up. I have also seen on a few occasions, that if the video card is bad, or a ram stick is loose, the computer will "power on" (green lights, fans etc) but it will do nothing.

as for a bios bomb, well, I highly doubt that. If a virus were to "nuke" your bios... it would have to be designed to reflash to a specific motherboard... blah blah blah... Simply put, it would be very complex, and it wouldn't work on EVERY computer... that's why they really aren't seen much in the wild anymore. I mean, why would a hacker waste time coding a low level bios virus when now... an os virus is just as, if not more effective (90% of things you can do in the bios, can actually be adjusted by windows...). In my 13 years of messing with computers... I have yet to actually see damage from a "bios bomb".

so, I would highly suggest that you check all connections to the motherboard (all pci, agp, pci-e, sata, ide, power, and ram). If that is the case, I know it sounds terrible, but try "parting"... first 3... video card, ram, and power supply (if you have extras of those). If none of that works... then it is dead... and most likely it is the motherboard fried.
