so, i softmodded my xbox. - 2008/04/21 00:01 first off, yeah i know, modchip better.
softmod was free, and for the amount i use my xbox, it's awesome.

i modded it according to this:
http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30- minutes.html
except for i have a friend (he encouraged me to do this) that let me borrow his profile on a memory stick, and his copy of mech assault.

the install was fantastic so easy.
now i'm just trying to figure out what all i want to do with it, other than stream media.

all ideas happily appreciated, i'm new to the modded console bit.

Re:so, i softmodded my xbox. - 2008/04/21 05:44 well, I personally have used krazie's installer... and I don't much care for it. His was kinda a rip off of "ltools"(although upgrading back to a kernel patcher instead of bios loader). By default, NDURE also usually installs unleashX as the default os. Unleashx is alright, but honestly, it is too "heavy" for standard use. It does have it's own "editor" in it, so you don't have to ftp in to add to the evox menu, but it seems too over the top for standard use. Personally, I would much rather start it up with EvoX, and then, if needed, boot into XBMC. Something I had wanted to try was to boot using XBMC as my dash, however, back when I was doing it (way before T3CH release 666), it wasn't fully functional to do so. Hopefully, I will be talking to a friend of mine... and we will be starting a collection.... the xbox "goodset"... unfortunately, it will be EXTREMELY large ( ~1+ T but it will be worth it. If you are interested in emulation, the xbox is wonderful. There are several n64 emu's that have been ported to the xbox, which makes it a perfect replacement for the 64. The only downside, is that a few games(Perfect Dark), that require more than the 64megs of ram that the xbox comes with. The interesting thing is, that the ram can be upgraded. The xbox has 2 open slots for ram chips. This will allow you to throw in 64 mb for a total of 128. If you enjoy linux, there are several xbox distros including gentoo, that work perfectly. After it is modded, it is very easy to hook up other devices to it (usb ANYTHING, wifi, bluetooth, flashdrives, keyboards, mice, etc) but only under linux. There was also a project to allow the xbox to output native VGA signals to a monitor. So technically, the limits... are anything you could possibly come up with under linux!

Re:so, i softmodded my xbox. - 2008/04/21 06:00 oofah... that's a big chunk of information.
i'll pore over that a few times
i've found that the menu sometimes hangs a bit.
and waiiiiit... an xbox only comes with 64MB of ram?
pathetic!
since i dont feel like paying for anything, i'm happy with XBMC. it plays all the stuff i want, so far as i've tried..
i have my pc for actually DOING stuff. i hate consoles for gaming. HATE them.
the XBMC for me, is really nice, cause instead of playing a movie on my pc, i can do it on the tv. i can play my backup copies of movies, and all that fun stuff, as well as movies i've saved off the internet.
i do find that XBMC sometimes hangs a bit though.. but i dont know anything that WOULDNT on such a pathetic amount of ram.

Re:so, i softmodded my xbox. - 2008/04/21 14:44 Did you manage to upgrade your hard drive from the base 8/10GB?

Also, I don't have XBMC hanging problems here, must be something with your box. Then again, I've upgraded everything but the ram and cpu xD
