Hydrogen fuel is a good idea in theory. The problem is that to generate hydrogen gas, water needs to be hydrolysed and this process takes more energy than is available in the hydrogen itself. What this means? If hydrogen was used on a large scale then it would create a power imbalance, and this imbalance would require an alternative power source simply to break even. Cars and the like would lower their carbon emissions but somewhere along the line either more carbon will be emitted by traditional sources or alternative power sources (another can of worms) will be required to fill the gap.
My two cents at least.
