Furthermore, you can enable a user account to have root privileges, although it isn't a good idea...you should look into SUSE or Redhat, as they are easier, and already all setup.
Oh...and I get boot times of about 19 seconds with linux. You just don't go default, and tweak it heavily...you do the same with windows with less effect.
