Rebuilding a kernel won't "frag" anything on your box. If it messes up, you just boot with the old one that you leave installed. It's not dangerous.
Furthermore, I used Redhat as an example...I was naming those distros that come with everything and the kitchen sink.
Okies, for your media player, you'd want XMMS. It looks and acts just like winamp. http://www.xmms.org/skins.php
Windows can be fast, but not by default. Once drivers are working, Linux outperforms by default. Why not try something new? It's not going to kill you.
