Re:Argh... - 2008/06/26 06:31 lol.. linux is not easier to use. My first complaint is that the filesystem is very specific... Dog.ini is not the same as dog.ini. I don't want 6 different copies of the same file to even possibly be available. As for easier on hardware... not so sure on that one. It seems that my battery always seems to drain quite a bit quicker with linux(yes, it is using sleep states). Not to mention... sound, coming from linux BLOWS. I am an absolute audiophile... and I'm not gonna even consider an os that doesn't even have decent sound support for one of the most common chipsets in the world! Not to mention, there is no port of winamp (and definately haven't found a good media player). I have tried running it under wine and cedega... no luck. Sexier gui... somewhat. More eyecandy... but easily combatted by the fact that by default... ubuntu doesn't even have the file explorer gui set to root permissions! (back to command line AGAIN). Seriously. If I wanted to have to type my administrative password for anything I wanted to do... I could always join up with windows vista... same "security feature". If you wanted to set up a better way of securing things... build a sandbox system into your os. That way, it runs in the sandbox, unless you specifically request it not to. My xp boxes all boot in roughly 25-27 seconds... linux, more like 70. I will gladly eat my words if you can fix all the crap I hate in it... but I have tried cutting down startup processes in linux... didn't help.

Don't get me wrong though... I use linux when I have to (development classes). But if I didn't have to use it... I wouldn't for the sheer fact of all the headache it causes. Yes, I realize it is free, but if it cannot replace my windows install... don't pretend that it can(pointed to all the linux fanboys).

sorry for that long winded and slighly frustrated rant

Re:Argh... - 2008/06/26 23:19 You weren't using a good kernel...

Try the zen kernel:
http://zen-sources.org/

Also, the best media player is songbird:
http://getsongbird.com/

Furthermore, you can enable a user account to have root privileges, although it isn't a good idea...you should look into SUSE or Redhat, as they are easier, and already all setup.

Oh...and I get boot times of about 19 seconds with linux. You just don't go default, and tweak it heavily...you do the same with windows with less effect.

Re:Argh... - 2008/06/29 08:09 yeah... I have a windows based media player... it's called winamp pro. I have used it since alpha v5. I am looking for a mediaplayer for linux (that doesn't look like itunes).

And I have no idea where to begin on building and replacing a kernel... not to mention... I don't want to risk fragging this computer. If I do... I get 6 hours of work to wipe and repair (format, install linux and xp and set up grub).

Redhat is no longer updated. It does however still have the private version "Redhat Enterprise". But if I wouldn't pay for windows... why would I pay for linux? (suse or redhat).

As for messing with windows... I have gotten pretty good at it. At most, on start up I have a total of 20 processes running (and that could probably be shaved down by another 4 or so). Normally I do not run over ~120 megs of ram at boot... and that is with fully running xp with no downsides (no starting of services and such...). If I just closed the lid on my computer (hibernate), then it takes roughly 8 seconds (takes that much time to load everything from hard drive back to ram at 2 gigs). Not to mention... with windows... I don't have to run around the entire internet trying to find dependencies... and then have to rewrite the code because I have version 2.6.15 instead of 2.6.12. Open source is just great... not a bad movement. But until it gains the standardization that windows has... then it will not gain interest. That is precisely why Ubuntu has gained interest among people... it is an all in one solution that is simple to deal with.

Re:Argh... - 2008/06/30 21:51 Rebuilding a kernel won't "frag" anything on your box. If it messes up, you just boot with the old one that you leave installed. It's not dangerous.

Furthermore, I used Redhat as an example...I was naming those distros that come with everything and the kitchen sink.

Okies, for your media player, you'd want XMMS. It looks and acts just like winamp.

Windows can be fast, but not by default. Once drivers are working, Linux outperforms by default. Why not try something new? It's not going to kill you.

Re:Argh... - 2008/07/01 06:50 lol.. I did try something new... I searched several times on the net... and still can't figure out why the sound is terrible in any media player on linux. I tried xmms... and it is lame compared to winamp... that's what winamp started as. It does not even have a media library window to "maintain" all of the songs... just a player and play list. If I just wanted a player/playlist... I would just make a copy of coolplayer for linux... or just run it under wine.

lol... default... I am a member of this board... do you really think anything I use/own is "default"?

Re:Argh... - 2008/07/01 07:23 linux is a bit hard to learn, but far superior.
songbird is an aweosme thing... on windows it bungs up occasionally, never tried it on linux.. and i've never had a problem with crappy audio.

i'll be reformatting for "regular maintenance" soon... cause after a while windows just sloooowwwsssss ddooowwnwnnnnn.
