It's not that hard...if you want to get better in Google, and get some pagerank love, go to forums.digitalpoint.com and outsource some link directory submissions, you can get a few thousand backlinks that way. Also, add your site to stumbleupon.
Also, make sure to have meta info on every page, and a universal sitemap, which you can point to in robots.txt by having Sitemap:http://blah.com/sitemap.xml
To further optimize, you could do little things like setup a cron job that calls a shell script that pings your rss feed randomly every so often.
Also, use some of the free search engine submitters that are out there with a throwaway email address, too.
Drop your links everywhere you can...forum signatures, comments on message boards, etc.
