How to disable programs that start on boot - 2006/06/05 13:24 Hey guys, this is a guide I made that didn't exactly make it to the homepage. Still very useful. Enjoy!

How to disable programs that start on computer start-up
Part 1 of XP tweaks you may have not known about.
by CodedChaos

Okay, so you turn on your computer, and then login at the Windows XP login
screen. Now you are attacked by a million different programs starting together (like AIM, MSN, GoogleTalk, etc) Some of these programs you've been able to stop from starting on windows start-up through on option in the program's configuration. But wait! Not all of the programs have an option like that. What do you do?!?!

That's where this guide comes in handy! This guide will show you have to

disable ANY program's starting on windows start-up. The term "windows

start-up" will from now on be called "on boot" in this guide.)

Okay, start by clicking the "Start" button.

Next click "Run."

In the Run window, type "msconfig" and hit enter.

Now you should have before you, the "System Configuration Utility."

In the "general" tab, make sure the button filled is "Selective Startup."

Right now you probably have "Normal Startup" selected.

Okay, now that you have "Selective Startup" selected, click on the "Startup"

tab.

Now let's find a program we don't want to start on boot. We're going to use

Quicktime, AIM, and Nvidia View manager as examples.

Okay, first MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DISABLING!!! Don't disable your

antivirus... or some important process. One way to make sure, is to check

the location. Like on AIM, you can see its "command" location indicates that

it's AIM, and not something important.

So as you can see in the screenshot, the startup item "aim" in connected to

AIM files.

Now, to disable it from starting on boot. uncheck the box next to its name.

We're also going to uncheck QuickTime, Ituneshelper, and Nvidia view

manager.

Okay, now click the "Ok" button. It will ask you if you want to restart or

just exit the configuration. For best results, I recommend you restart, or

some of your changes may not take effect.

And there you go. A very easy way to cut down of startup time of your

computer. Just remember to pay attention to what you disable.

May you have a pleasant reboot.

Re:How to disable programs that start on boot - 2006/06/05 17:51 Great guide, even though I already know how to do this (simple and common sense) some probably don't and it will help them. +1 Karma.

Re:How to disable programs that start on boot - 2006/06/06 01:32 It's a good guide, and its nice to have some guides for n00bs around here. Although I would assume most of the members of these forums probably are familiar with how to do this already.
