Re:laser trip sensor - 2007/04/23 07:20 Absolutely!! A virtual gate around my car, yard or property perimeter (dependent on effective range) would be awesome!

I don't live in a bad neighborhood, but bikes and lawn mowers are hot commodities because we live just outside of a medium-sized city. I heard 36 cars were stolen or vandalized in our area last week.

Re:laser trip sensor - 2007/04/23 13:10 I have some nasty people that live down the street, more of the jealous type. If they are jealous of what you have they steal it or break it. They have been that way since I was a kid. Plus now that I have grown up there is a new batch of kids showing up on the streets now. I' going to be putting in cameras this summer. But hey being alerted when it happens is better so i can run outside with my shotty.

Re:laser trip sensor - 2007/04/30 06:13 hey coded, if I do a few pictures, and give you all of the info, will you put it into html for the main site... cause I suck at it, and hevnsnt wants submissions in html (or so it says). and as for replys to everyone else.. sorry it's taken so long... finals suck(and so does studying).

um, yes, this could be done with an infrared laser, most commonly one from a cd drive(yes, if you look up power pinouts blah blah blah). Um, from what I saw in building the circuit, you can actually have it designed to "run" whatever the hell you feel like... it is simply a "detector"... but it can be used to drive anything from a buzzer to a big screen tv(not recommended). In it's current state, its not great for large distances, such as a driveway.. (unless it's totally dark outside, maybe, or a brigher laser). The problem comes, from the fact of the laser beam intensity at a distance. Since the beam strenght decreases over distance, you may get 6 inch detection, or you may get 6 feet.(ps, you can actually overdrive(overvolt) those crappy laser pointers if you dont need it to last a few years. *i was running 6 volts through a rating of ~4.5*) YMMV.

BTW... how deep shall I go into the explaination of this? like... EE student deep -physics? or just radioshack counterguy knowledge? ^_^

Users decide, and I will work on it this next coming week.

Edit: also, if you were really feeling up to it... you could build several of these to secure a yard, and send their output to a microcontroller for "monitoring" on your pc.
