it depends, i believe the stock intel cooler (the round one with the fan) has thermal paste already on it, you just stick it on. if it doesnt have the paste, you DEFINITELY need some. it allows the cooler to work a LOT more efficiently. if you're just testing the processor for a few seconds, it's not necessary, you just need hte cooler, it's better for a mess if you plan on taking it off. a lot of aftermarket coolers, like the gigabyte one i have, come with thermal paste, but if you're choosy (about a few degrees) you should use Arctic Silver, it's the best thermal paste out there.
