Re:Argh... - 2008/06/26 06:31
lol.. linux is not easier to use. My first complaint is that the filesystem is very specific... Dog.ini is not the same as dog.ini. I don't want 6 different copies of the same file to even possibly be available. As for easier on hardware... not so sure on that one. It seems that my battery always seems to drain quite a bit quicker with linux(yes, it is using sleep states). Not to mention... sound, coming from linux BLOWS. I am an absolute audiophile... and I'm not gonna even consider an os that doesn't even have decent sound support for one of the most common chipsets in the world! Not to mention, there is no port of winamp (and definately haven't found a good media player). I have tried running it under wine and cedega... no luck. Sexier gui... somewhat. More eyecandy... but easily combatted by the fact that by default... ubuntu doesn't even have the file explorer gui set to root permissions! (back to command line AGAIN). Seriously. If I wanted to have to type my administrative password for anything I wanted to do... I could always join up with windows vista... same "security feature". If you wanted to set up a better way of securing things... build a sandbox system into your os. That way, it runs in the sandbox, unless you specifically request it not to. My xp boxes all boot in roughly 25-27 seconds... linux, more like 70. I will gladly eat my words if you can fix all the crap I hate in it... but I have tried cutting down startup processes in linux... didn't help.
Don't get me wrong though... I use linux when I have to (development classes). But if I didn't have to use it... I wouldn't for the sheer fact of all the headache it causes. Yes, I realize it is free, but if it cannot replace my windows install... don't pretend that it can(pointed to all the linux fanboys).
sorry for that long winded and slighly frustrated rant
