Update your Motorola ROKR via iTunes Print E-mail
Written by hevnsnt
Wednesday, 14 September 2005
User Shoey (of Howardforums.com) has figured out how to update your E398 Motorola ROKR phone using iTunes.  We are quite fortunate that he has put together the files required to acomplish this hack, as well as a tutorial on how to do so.  The only problem is that the patched phones have a 25 song limit, however he is currently working on that as well! All credit for this hack goes to Shoey, excellent job man!

Shoey’s i398 Monster Pack

Final Release

Caution – Modding your phone will void your warranty, and you may even kill your phone. If you do so, it is your responsibility over what happens. Neither I, Motorola, the software providers nor hosts of the materials will be held accountable for your actions.

This Monster Pack is for the E398 ONLY.

A DATA-CABLE is required. If you do not have one of these you may buy one cheaply off eBay.

1) Required Materials

Items in green are included in Shoey’s i398 Monster Pack. Those in blue are links to where that software can be obtained. Those in black are warez copies, and must be obtained by you.

The Flashes

The latest Monster Pack is available here, including all of the files listed in green

R373 Flash enabler flex

12i PRE flash

Shoey’s 1398 Monster Pack

The Tools

Bezol’s P2K Tools

FlashBackup

MultiFlashFlex (included with PST)

iTunes 4.9

Before proceeding, it is necessary that you install PST and Bezol’s P2K Tools, and install the drivers for your phone.

Information on installing PST can be found here.

Information on installing P2K Tools can be found here.

2) Backing Up Your Phone

In case anything goes wrong during the flashing procedure, or if you simply do not like the new firmware, we will create a backup of your phone as it is now.

Backing up the Flash

  • Under USB settings on your E398, switch to “data/fax connection”
  • Open FlashBackup
  • Change the Memory Size to 32 MB, and make sure “Full backup” is selected.

The screen should look like this:

If it does not display “Phone connected” in the lower left corner, you have not installed the drivers correctly.

  • Click “Create Backup”, and wait for the process to finish.

The phone will switch into boot loader, the loader will be sent to the phone, and FlashBackup will make a complete backup of your phone. The screen should now look like this:

The bar at the bottom will fill as the backup is created. This will take around 5 minutes.

Once finished, the screen will look like this:

The backup is saved and the FlashBackup folder, hopefully you will not need it. Click HERE if you do.

  • It would be a good idea to copy this backup to an external storage device, such as a CD.

Backing up the Phonebook

  • Switch your E398 to data/fax again
  • Connect to pc and open p2k tools
  • Press connect, and go to phonebook
  • Press read, and then backup. Save the file

3) Current Software Determination

The flashing procedure is different for r372 phones and r373 phones. Before we continue, it is necessary to determine which one your phone is. To do this, follow these instructions

1) Turn the phone off

2) Hold * and # when turning the phone back on

3) The information on screen tells us the software version of your phone. The first 4 characters on the third line will tell us what version your phone is.

Note: V398, 95R, and 95R_A are all R372. If you have bought this phone from a shop and have never modded it before, it will likely be R372.

All previous i398 Monster Packs are R373

If the phone is r372, then we first need to make it r373. If the phone is already r373, click HERE to skip to the flashing procedure.

4) R373 Conversion

If your phone is R372, you must first make it R373 before flashing the Monster Pack.

  • To do this, open MultiFlashFlex within the PST directory
  • Check the box “enable flex” on flex setup, and browse to R373 Flash Enabler.hs
  • Ensure that all 4 boxes on the right are NOT checked.

If the screen looks like this, you are ready to flex. Press start.

The column to the left of “Motorola Phone should have a yellow box as your phone is flexed.

When it is complete, the box will turn green, and result will display “Successful FLEX”

Your phone is now ready to become R373. We must now flash it with 12i PRE Flash.shx

  • Unplug the phone from the data cable and turn it back on. Plug the data cable back in.
  • Check the box “enable flash” and browse to 12i PRE flash.shx. Check the first 2 boxes under preferences.

  • Press start, sit back, and wait 10 minutes while your phone is upgraded. At this point, the phone will be switched into flash mode (boot loader).

There are several Code Groups to flash (1 and 2 take the longest).

While the phone is being flashed, the screen will display “SW Upgrade”, or the screen will be blank (white).

  • Once the flashing has finished, your phone will be R373. The 12i PRE flash is not a stable Monster Pack, and your phone may not even turn on at this point. If it does, charge the phone. If it does not, hold * and # when you power it on and it will go into boot loader. Notice how the phone now says it is R373. Leave the phone in boot loader for the next step.

5) Flashing the i398 Monster Pack

Those of you who have just upgraded to R373 will be familiar with this process already.

  • Turn on the phone and connect it to the cable. If it does not turn on, hold * and # and start it in boot loader.
  • Open MultiFlashFlex, check the “enable flash” box, and the first 2 boxes under preferences.
  • Browse to Shoey’s i398 Monster Pack.shx

If the phone is in boot loader, it will appear as “S Flash Neptune LTE” under devices.

  • Press start to commence the flashing.

The screen on your phone will display “SW Upgrade in progress..” or the screen will be blank (white).

Once completed, the yellow box will turn green and your phone will turn off.

  • Turn it on

Congratulations, you have successfully upgraded to the i398.

6) Restoring the phonebook

While enjoying all the wonderful new features of the i398, you may failed to have noticed that it is a bit, erm….., bare.

  • To restore the phonebook, plug the data cable back in and go onto Bezol’s P2K Tools again.
  • Click connect, then click restore. Choose the file you saved earlier.

7) Customisations (Customizations if you are American)

Although I tried to make it a “Flash & Forget” Monster Pack, there are one or two things that you still need to do to get the phone in full working order.

GPRS and MMS Settings

The i398 comes with a blank websession file. To restore you GPRS and MMS settings, go to www.hellomoto.com – choose your country, click operator settings, and under the list of services choose operator settings again. Click signup now and enter your email address, then follow the instructions. Motorola will send you a message that will install all the changes for you, all you need to do is enter the code that comes up at the top of the “settings sent” screen.

Tones, Wallpapers, and Screensavers

To adhere to the wishes of certain people at HoFo, I left the Monster Pack in a “Lite” format – i.e. with few tones and pictures, but plenty of space to add your own. To add your own content, use Mobile Phone Tools, Bezol’s P2K Tools, or get a mate to send you stuff over Bluetooth (you might want to change your Bluetooth name too). If anybody dares to have anything related to the crazy frog on their i398, I will personally see to their death.

Shortcuts

To make a shortcut, browse to the place you want to make the shortcut and hold the menu button. To use a shortcut, press MENU + [shortcut button]

The following shortcuts have already been assigned:

1) Find Me (Bluetooth)

2) JAL (see Installing Games)

3) Ring Style > Loud

4) Ring Style > Vibrate

5) Ring Style > Silent

Installing Games

Java games can be downloaded OTA (over the air – WAP), via Bluetooth (OBEX Object Push), or via MIDway.

  • To install a game via MIDway, press MENU + 2 on the phone and insert the data cable. The screen will display JAL Link Active.
  • Open MIDway on your PC and open the JAD file for the game you want to install, and press send.
  • Accept the file on your phone, and choose where you want to install it to.

Advanced Customisation

Startup

The startup tone is /c/mobile/audio/Cust_Start~up.mp3

The startup animation is /a/custwakeup.gif

Menu

To edit the menu, use xoclipse’s vxxx tool, and use the standard menu codes. The code for iTunes is ITUNES.

8) New Features

iTunes

To use the new iTunes feature on your phone, install iTunes 4.9 on your PC. Change the USB connection on your phone to “Memory Card” and plug it into your PC. iTunes will start up on its own, and you will be asked to give a name for the phone (choose i398 J). To improve the connection between your iTunes phone and your PC, go to preferences > phone > enable data usage.

At present there is a 25 song limit on the iTunes software on the phone.

Video Camera

You will surely have noticed the Video Camera icon under multimedia. Under video setup, you can choose the quality of the recording, and whether to record sound. There is a 500 kB limit on the total video size (which equates to 20 seconds on high quality, and around 1 minute on low quality)

Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode can be found under SETTINGS. This prevents the phone from acquiring a signal, and makes it safe to use on planes. This is completely useless because the flight crew will not understand what Airplane Mode is, and you will be told to turn it off. As soon as they are gone turn it back on and make videos of the trolley dolly flashing her assets at the back during the pre-flight safety demonstrations (If you do not believe this happens, take a look for yourself. British Airways are especially good at this ‘in-flight entertainment’).

Phonebook Search

It is now possible to perform multiple character searches in the phonebook. This option is enabled by default. To change the search mode, go on Phonebook > Setup > Search Method.

Idle Screen

The idle screen has been changed. Instead of just a blank screen with a clock and a few status symbols, this has been overlayed on top of the screensaver. The background is now white, making it much easier to read. If you choose not to have a screensaver, the idle screen will show if you have any missed calls or messages.

9) If it all goes wrong….

…then you have your FlashBackup

This is only for people who have failed to flash their phones.

  • Turn the phone on in boot loader (hold * and #) and open FlashBackup.

  • Click “Restore backup”. The loader will be sent, and you will be asked to choose the file created earlier.

The phone’s memory will be erased completely, including the boot loader. If you turn your phone off or unplug the cable, it will be dead forever.

Erasing can take upto 8 minutes and its status will not be updated. Flashbackup should look like this:

By this point, it is likely that you will have stopped breathing.

Eventually, the flash will be erased and the restore process will begin.

Once the bar is full, the phone will turn itself off, and will be restored to exactly how it was before you started the procedure.
