ps2 memory card exploit Print E-mail
Written by ir1337

The following exploit allows anyone with a memory card and a valid PS1 disc to hi-jack the boot process and run any piece of code on there PS2. Absolutely no modification to your system is necessary to run programs using the exploit.  All you really need to do is find a way to send the files to the memory card to enable the exploit. A boot disc like Swap magic or Action replay should do it. You can also use the original hdloader cd to install the exploit.

Thing You Will Need

Let's Begin

First thing to do is make a new folder in your C drive named MC, and extract

filepackab_ps2_hddloader.rar to it.

Next, put the PSX (PS1) game you plan to use for this into your computer's cd-rom drive.

Open up notepad (Click "start", Click "run", Type "notepad", hit "OK")

Now navigate to your cd-rom where the PSX game is, and open the file "system.cnf" on

the PSX cd.

In the first line is your PSX game ID. Write this down because you will need it. [yours
may say SLUS (or something different, or have a dash (-) instead of an underscore (_)]

You only need what comes after "BOOT = cdrom:" and before ;1, in my case it's

SCUS_941.94

Now we need to open up a command prompt. (Click "start", Click "run", Type "cmd",

Hit "OK"). Next, type cd and hit enter and then cd MC and hit enter.

Now type titleman -a SCUS_941.94 (your SCUS PSX ID will be different unless you are
using Gran Turismo too). Titleman will then modify the file. If you don't get the following screen then retrace your steps. (yours will have less because you dont have as many games added)

11.jpg

If you see . . . done then you have done everything correctly. Next we have to burn what we have just created.

The Burning Process

Open Nero.

You need to create a "CD-ROM (ISO) [1], make sure its not multisession [2], and then

you need to click the "ISO"[3] tab.

13.jpg

Once you are in the ISO tab make sure your settings are exactly like ones in the following

picture, then click New.

14.jpg

In the file browser go to "my computer" the "C:" drive, and the "MC" folder, highlight all the files except "titleman.exe" and drag them to the other side (as indicated in the picture), then click the burn icon (in the little red box.. or just click filewrite cd)

15.jpg

Then hit the burn button up top (in the red square). This will bring up the following window (again, make sure your settings are the same, except possibly burn speed)

16.jpg

And finally, click Write.

Installing the FreeHDloader

You will need a way to boot your CD-r you have just created in your PS2. I used the

Swap Magic 2.0 CD loader and it worked perfectly.

Note from Spuzz:

a few users have told me that their gamesharks (gamshark2 v2 or below) will work too.

you need to boot the cogswap loader first, then boot the the installation cd-r). you can

download the cogswap loader here. i cant help you with the gameshark if you have any

problems.

v8/v9/v10 ps2 users cannot use the SM2 (swap magic 2.0) CD on their ps2's, but they can

use their SM2 DVD's.

here is the install process: boot up your SM2 DVD, swap in the cogswap loader dvdr,

eject in an original ps2 cd game,

and then swap in the exploit install cd-r

Make sure you have your memory card in port 1, (and NO memory card in port 2!) boot

your CD-r that you just made in your PS2. This is a one time deal, you will not need the

CD-r again after this (But if you are a packrat like me you will keep it).

Once the CD-r boots you will get a screen like this:

And if all is good you should finally see this:

Booting the FreeHDloader

Take out your CD-r, and pop in your chosen PSX game. Reboot the PS2 and hopefully

you see something like this

and finally this: (Minus my random mspaint skills)

Like I mentioned in the beginning, if you want to boot to the FreeHDloader then keep

your memory card in and boot the PSX game. If you take either of these out the PS2 will boot as normal.

Installing Games

Installing original games is easy enough. On the FreeHDloader go to Install, the pop int he game and hit OK.

If you want to install a backup you need to have an original PS2 game and follow these simple directions.

1. Boot to the FreeHDloader

2. Take out your PSX game and put in a PS2 game (any will do but try to use one that is

fairly large in data (just a hunch to make this go smoothly)) wait 10 - 15 seconds for the PS2 to recognize the disk)

3. Hit install, and in that pause switch out the original for the backup using either the Slide Card method, or flip top (whatever will work here)

4. Hit continue and then it will examine this disk and everything will be as if you had an

original game in.

The End

Go and copy games to your HDD so you don't stress out your PS2 laser!

Credit to spuzz for writing the original tutorial.

His had to much cursing and was hard to follow,

so I rewrote it.
