About I-Hacked..
I-Hacked.com is a how-to & community website for those interested in hacking, electronics, and computers. I-Hacked.com was named and began in Auguest of 2000 in response to the I-Opener hacking craze (I-Opener -> I-Hacked get it?). I have always been facinated with electronics, ever since I can remember I was getting in trouble for taking my parents stuff apart (& not always getting them back together again). I-Hacked quickly grew to a place where I could catalog my favorite hardware hacks, and other technology related articles that I think are sweet.
Our Audience
We have a diverse range of visitors, As I try to keep the articles related to ANYTHING Technology based, I am open to articles that are just "Generally cool". The audience for your article will include hackers, experimenters, electronic hobbyists, engineers, technicians, programmers, system admins, computer users, students and teachers. Our visitors are interested in understanding different technologies, how things work, how they can be manipulated or modified and ultimately getting involved at a hands-on level.
The diversity of subjects appeals to all levels of experience and spans such topics as communications, networking, security, computers, electronics, amateur robotics, circuit design, lasers, computer control, home automation, microcontrollers, data acquisition, new technology, DIY projects, electronic theory, and more, not to mention old-tech (vintage computers, electronic, etc).
Many readers are involved professionally, off the job in some way and, are likely to be EE or CS graduates, project designers and builders, computer hobbyists, experimenters, and the list goes on. Experience levels range from beginners and students through seasoned technology veterans.
Quick List
Here is a Quick list of the guidelines you should use for submitting an article.
- Write article in a Step 1. Step 2. Type format. Make your article easy to read and follow.
- Submissions should be a zip/rar file containing an HTML document, with all Photos, and files needed to support the docuement. If your hack requires a file, then please submit that file along with the document.
- Don't Plagerize. If you find an article you would like to use, please write the article in your own words, and submit. If you would like, you could write the author of the article and ask if it is ok for I-Hacked to use the article. If you get permission, please send authorization & article as stated above. (The original author will receive credit)
DO NOT Just send in a link to a hack. Although I might find it interesting, you will not receive an account for it.
Subject Matter
All articles should relate in some way to hacking, underground community, electronics, computers or the various associated technologies and events. All types of material including first hand personal experience, technical, informative, hands-on, recent news, event coverage, entertainment, educational, etc., are encouraged.
Article Format
Keep your writing informal and concise. Here are some concrete suggestions:
- Your articles should be in the Step1. Step2. type format. Make your article easy to understand and follow.
- Use the active voice when possible. (Avoid excessive use of forms of "to be." For example, don't say "The problem is that XXX", just say "XXX is a problem.")
- Don't use "we" or "our" unless there are multiple authors; use "I" instead. Similarly, refer to the reader as "you." (For example, "Although I chose a simpler approach, you might find the full algorithm necessary in some situations.")
- Avoid needless duplication. Read your article carefully and ask yourself whether each sentence and paragraph adds to the article or simply duplicates a point you've already made.
- Many writers find it useful to put their article aside for a few days after they write it, and then come back and read it again.
- Get a friend to read and comment on your article before you send it to us.
- Make sure that every Figure, Table, Example, or Listing is referred to somewhere in the article.
- Don't put lengthy code excerpts, tables, or figures into the text. Any piece of code longer than a few words should go into an "Example" or a "Listing" (see above.)
Free account terms
Believe it or not, I would prefer EVERY person gain membership through submitting articles rather than paying for an account. The more information I have presented to me, the more I can share with the community. If decide to publish your submission, you will receive a free account BEFORE it is published. As this website is run by 1 person, this could take some time. I normally try to publish good submissions within a week or so of submission, but as this website is not my "Real Job" other duties often call, and it could take awhile for me to get around to it. But trust me, if you submit a good article that I know I am going to publish eventually, you will normally get an account right there on the spot. If your submission never gets published, and you never hear back from me, I am sorry but your article was probably not what I was looking for, or did not follow these guidelines.
Style
Reader friendly, easy reading style is preferred. Humor and "personality" are welcome if in good taste. Use short, crisp sentences. Keep paragraphs to roughly four or five sentences. Use subheadings to break the text into easily readable and identifiable sections. ALWAYS provide a title. Subheadings, sidebars, photographs and good quality graphics are highly encouraged, but not required.
Double and triple check your facts. Verify the spelling of personal names, titles, and company names. If you provide web links, please make every effort to ensure they are current and correct. Get your dates, phone numbers, and references correct. Publishing corrections in subsequent issues will not recover missed opportunities, hurt feelings, or damaged reputations.
If you use industry specific acronyms, the first reference should be fully described followed by the acronym for readers who may not yet be familiar with said acronym. If you refer to sources of parts or information, be sure to include the complete address, phone number and, if possible, internet web address so our readers can contact the source directly.
Author's Bio / Blurb
If the article was written by you, please provide a short biography of yourself with your article submission. Make sure to give handle, any method in which the readers may contact you directly (if you wish that information to be PUBLISHED), your background and any interesting facts you think the readers will enjoy. We encourage reader comments and response to all articles, so be prepared to back up your work!
Photographs, Files, & Special Programs
Before you submit an article, make sure you have packaged up all pictures, files, or special programs needed for your hack. I-Hacked is a one-stop shop for the hack, I do not want our readers to have to hunt for special firmwares, files, programs or anything like that. Make sure your submission includes EVERYTHING a reader may need to complete the hack. Please note, although credit will be given to the original author, all media submitted will become I-Hacked property.
How & where to send completed article
Submissions should be a zip/rar file containing an HTML document, with all Photos, and files needed to support the document. If your hack requires a file, then please submit that file along with the document. Each article element should be stored as a single file. Things I DON'T want (so please don't submit) Anything from that could, would or did show up in the Anarchist's cookbook, anything that discusses any topic of pure theft, defacement, or anything else lame. If you have found a vulnerability in something that COULD lead to people using it badly that is fine, but don't write with malicious intent.
Once you are ready, please send the file to me at submissions@i-hacked.com with the subject: "I-Hacked.com Article Submission"
