Here is a tutorial on how to get SMS to work on ALL Nextel handsets, something that models prior to the i860 are not capable of. {mos_sb_discuss:18}
This method has now been established to work on ALL handsets.
Believe it or not folks I managed to get TRUE SMS messaging to work on the i730 (and have been testing on all other models)! I know there have been rumors about this in the past but believe it or not it's true and it works as of right now. This allows you to send SMS msg's from your contacts menu like everyone always wanted without EVER going into your net menu, meaning you can compose msg, save it and send it later despite nothaving service at that time.
First have one of the mods enable MMS and SMS , as you can't do it with just RSS alone(for the MMS part as SMS can be turned on via rss carrier).
ONLY enable MMS in R8 handsets, R9 handsets must NOT have it enabled! Otherwise it will NOT work, this is the key to getting it to work on all other handsets.
Then once sms and mms(R8 units only!) are enabled in the codeplug, save it to the phone.
Then you should come up with a new menu like this (Most of you have seen this before if you tried this in the past):
voice mail:
net alert:
text inbox:
drafts:
text outbox:
quick notes
:

Now, scroll down to text inbox. While it's highlighted hit the menu button.
This will give you two options:
Text msg setup
delete all

Select text msg setup
This gives you more options:
Signature:
Srvc Cntr No:
Expire after:
Auto clean up:
Clean up After:

Select Srvc cntr No:
Enter this number(it's the service center Number for Telus): +15148210053 You MUST have the "+" in there!

Now leave the menus entirely

This WILL allow you to go to ANY of your contacts, scroll to the contact you want to send a msg to, hit the menu button, and select "compose SMS"
this will add their name/number to your outgoing msg in your text inbox.
Now simply type out your msg, and hit send. You should see new graphics with the msg sending. I've tried this with FOUR different phones having the msg's sent to each of them, it worked everytime. It looks like with nextel setting up sms for the i860, it allows the handsets to use it as long as you have a working service center number, which was always one of the issues with it not working.
